Front squats often feel harder at lower weights because the upright torso and rack position demand more upper-back and core stability. That doesn't mean your legs are weaker — it means the limiting factor shifted. Standard rep max formulas still apply, but your cleanest set may be fewer reps than back squats since form breaks sooner as the rack starts to slip.
Once you have an estimate, a strength block might use 80–85% for lower reps with longer rest. For hypertrophy, live closer to 65–75%, keep reps higher, and manage fatigue so each set still looks like a real barbell squat. Track your estimate over time — a steady climb is a strong signal your strength is trending in the right direction.
It's an estimate, and accuracy depends heavily on consistent depth and form across every rep in your set. A set where depth drifts or the last reps turn into a good-morning pattern will inflate the number beyond your real squat max.
The rep max formulas (Epley, Brzycki, Lombardi) apply the same way to both, but treat them as separate lifts for tracking purposes since the limiting factor and typical rep range often differ between the two.
