Bench press numbers get unreliable fast when reps aren't consistent. This bench press calculator estimates your one-rep max (1RM) from a recent set — your weight and rep count — then turns it into training percentages you can actually use.
The set you choose matters as much as the formula. A clean estimating set looks like this: you could maybe do one more rep if you had to, your range of motion stays the same from the first rep to the last, and your bar path and tempo don't fall apart at the end.
Epley (1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)) is the most common default and works well across most rep ranges. Brzycki tends to be slightly more conservative past 8 reps. Mayhew is specifically tuned for bench-style pressing movements and is a good cross-check. Lombardi runs a smoother curve and is useful for comparison rather than as your primary number.
Once you have an estimate, use it to set training percentages instead of chasing a max every session: 80–90% for strength work with low reps and long rest, 65–80% for hypertrophy with moderate reps, and 50–70% for technique or speed work. Re-check your estimate every 4–8 weeks or after a clear jump in performance.
It's an estimate, not a guarantee. The closer your set looks like a strong, repeatable lift with consistent form, the closer the prediction lands. A bouncing or half-range set will skew the number higher than your real max.
Aim for a hard, clean set of 2–8 reps. That range keeps the set strength-dominant and your form stable. Above 10–12 reps, endurance starts to matter more than strength, and the estimate gets noisier.
Not quite — but a 225 lb (two-plate) bench is a genuine strength milestone for most recreational lifters, especially without significant bodyweight or training experience behind it. Where you land depends heavily on bodyweight, training age, and consistency.
Only with a spotter, a proper warm-up progression, and enough rest between attempts. Most lifters get more training value from an estimate used to set percentages than from testing a true 1RM every few weeks.
